Te Kaupapa o Te Aho Tapu

‘Rangaranga i Te Aho Tapu Kia Hua Mai Te Rangatiratanga’

The weaving of a korowai provides the metaphor that describes our approach to supporting and retaining beginning Māori medium teachers through to full teacher certification and beyond. In this model, apprentice weavers, Pia and LAT’s, benefit from the ‘tutelage’ of more experienced and expert weavers, Pou Tautoko (in-school mentors) and Pou Kōkiri (facilitators) while drawing on and contributing to the skills of the wider weaving or teaching community.

The key components of our professional learning and mentoring model therefore include:

  1. a tailored programme of support and guidance consistent with Tikanga Māori, values and philosophies;

  2. a focus on raising capabilities of Pia, LAT’s and Pou Tautoko to develop effective teaching and learning for diverse learners within Māori medium settings; and

  3. effective educative mentoring for sustained professional learning and development (PLD) for Pia, LAT’s, Pou Tautoko and Kaiako.
